Star Map Poster - fotojockovic.com/stars ======================================= Makes a poster of the real night sky over any place at any moment. Everything runs in the browser; nothing the user types or makes leaves the device. Our own work: the poster designs, layout and renderer (display list -> canvas / SVG / PDF), the star, figure, grid and Milky Way projection code, horizon clipping, label placement, the Moon phase drawing, the PDF and SVG writers, the Rust kernel in src-rs/ (Milky Way reprojection with dithering, streaming PNG encoder; MIT), the offline place search, the room preview, the UI and the texts and translations. Everything else that ships to the browser: 1. Astronomy Engine 2.1.19, Don Cross - MIT. https://github.com/cosinekitty/astronomy Sun, Moon and planet positions, sidereal time, precession, nutation, refraction. Bundled into app.js. 2. opentype.js 2.0.0, Frederik De Bleser and contributors - MIT. https://github.com/opentypejs/opentype.js Glyph outlines for the SVG and PDF export (opentype.js, loaded only when exporting vector files). 3. miniz_oxide 0.8 (Frommi, oyvindln and contributors) and adler2 - MIT / Apache-2.0 / zlib. Compiled into wasm/skykernel.wasm (deflate for PNG and PDF). 4. Star catalogue (data/stars1.bin.gz, data/stars2.bin.gz): The Hipparcos Catalogue, ESA 1997 (ESA SP-1200), via VizieR I/239 (CDS, Strasbourg). 41,057 stars brighter than V = 8, positions moved from epoch J1991.25 to J2000.0 with their proper motions. ESA/CDS data, free to use with acknowledgement. 5. Star names (in data/sky.json): IAU Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN), IAU Division C Working Group on Star Names (WGSN), https://www.iau.org/public/themes/naming_stars/ - IAU products are CC BY 4.0 (attribution). 6. Constellation figures, names (with translations) and boundaries (in data/sky.json): d3-celestial by Olaf Frohn, https://github.com/ofrohn/d3-celestial - BSD 3-Clause: Copyright (c) 2015, Olaf Frohn. (d3-celestial credits: figures after the IAU constellation pages; boundaries from Davenhall & Leggett 1989, VizieR VI/49.) Figure vertices were snapped to the Hipparcos stars (largest offset 0.005 degrees). 7. Milky Way (data/mw1k.jpg, data/mw4k.jpg): NASA Deep Star Maps 2020, milkyway_2020_4k.exr, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio (https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4851), created by Ernie Wright (USRA). Gaia DR2: ESA/Gaia/DPAC. Converted to luminance, re-gridded, smoothed, tone-mapped, resized. NASA media; used with the credit requested by SVS. 8. Accuracy check (2026-10-16): positions computed by this tool were compared with Skyfield 1.55 (JPL DE421, IAU 2000A nutation) and JPL Horizons for Belgrade 2026, Sydney 2000, New York 1985 and Reykjavik 2040. Stars: largest difference 10.7 arcseconds; Sun, Moon and planets: largest difference 26 arcseconds (Saturn, 1985). No GPL code is shipped. No machine-learning model is used.
