DPI and print size: pixels to inches and cm
Prints look sharp at 300 DPI when held in the hand; 150–200 DPI is fine for posters seen from a step away. The DPI number stored in a file does not change the picture, only the pixels matter.
Inches = pixels ÷ DPI. Centimetres = inches × 2.54. Pixels = inches × DPI.
Questions
How big can I print my photo?
Divide the pixels by the DPI. A 4032 × 3024 px phone photo prints at 13.4 × 10.1 in (34 × 26 cm) at 300 DPI, which looks sharp in the hand, and at about 27 × 20 in (68 × 51 cm) at 150 DPI, which is fine for a poster seen from a step away.
What DPI do I need to print a photo?
300 DPI is the usual target for prints you hold in your hand (10×15 cm, 5×7 in, A4). 200 DPI still looks good, and 150 DPI is enough for large posters you look at from a distance. The DPI number saved in a file does not change the picture; only the pixels count.
How many pixels are in an inch or a centimetre?
It depends on the DPI: at 300 DPI an inch holds 300 pixels and a centimetre about 118. So pixels ÷ DPI = inches, and inches × 2.54 = centimetres. At 96 DPI (screens) an inch is 96 pixels.
How do I calculate an aspect ratio?
Divide the width and the height by their greatest common divisor: 1920 × 1080 becomes 16:9, 1080 × 1350 becomes 4:5. To keep a ratio when resizing, new height = new width × height ÷ width. The calculator does both and also names the closest common ratio.
What are the standard photo print sizes?
In inches: 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 8×12, 11×14, 16×20 and 20×30. In Europe: 10×15, 13×18, 15×21, 20×30, 30×40 and 40×60 cm, plus A4 and A3 paper. 4×6 in and 10×15 cm are the usual photo size; each size's pixels at 300 DPI are in the table.
Why does my photo need cropping for some print sizes?
Phone photos are 4:3 and most cameras 3:2, while 8×10 is 4:5 and A4 is about 1:1.41. When the shapes differ, part of the photo is cut off. The table shows how much, and the Crop button lets you choose which part to keep.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. FotoJock runs entirely in your browser: the files are read, converted and saved on your own phone or computer. Nothing is sent to a server, and it keeps working offline once the page is open.
Is it really free?
Yes, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. FotoJock is made by Foto Jocković, a photo shop in Belgrade.
